Paper's Economic Contribution
The
Australian paper industry is an important contributor to the Australian
economy, employing more than 8000 people, mostly in regional areas
such as Albury-Wodonga and the Latrobe Valley.
Paper manufacturing makes a significant contribution to the regional
economies where mills are situated. It is one of the most capital and
energy intensive industries in Australia with capital investments worth
more than $3.5 billion.
It turns over sales of around $3.4 billion every year, and is a high-tech,
innovative industry. Paper makes a major contribution to Australia's technical,
engineering, scientific and intellectual capital - in 1999-2000, the industry
spent about $80 million on research and development.
