Aerobic and Anaerobic Composting

Composting relies on bacteria to break down plant matter. The type of composting depends on which type of bacteria it is made with:

  1. Aerobic composting uses aerobic bacteria to help break down organic material. Aerobic bacteria need oxygen to live. Turning the compost regularly provides this oxygen.

  2. Anaerobic composting relies on anaerobic bacteria, which live in places where there is no oxygen. Anaerobic bacteria produce compost slower than aerobic bacteria. The compost is also more likely to become smelly.
