How to Build Your Own Compost, continued
- To start the composting process, bacteria is
needed. This can come from adding soil or old compost. Animal manure
can also be used, but
only if it comes from plant-eating animals, like horses or sheep.
- Add some water - but not too much. If the compost
bin is too wet or too dry, things won’t rot quickly. The material
needs to be kept moist to make quick, rich compost.
- Bacteria breaks down waste faster when
the material is warm. Keeping the compost in a container with a lid
will help
store
the heat.
- To provide your compost with more air,
stir the material occasionally with a pitchfork.
