Compost Troubleshooting
Fixing your compost problems:
- Too wet — improve
drainage, or add some dry compost ingredients like newspaper or sawdust.
- Too
dry — water your compost, or add mushy organic matter like vegetable
scraps.
- Pests — cover your compost
with a lid or a thick layer of dirt. Don’t put in animal products.
- Taking
too long — increase oxygen by stirring up the compost bin.
Some very thick and fibrous organic matter, like palm leaves, take
a very
long time to
decompose. It is probably best to leave these out of your compost.
- Too
smelly — might be too wet or not enough oxygen. Might also be due to
animal or dairy products – try to leave these out of your compost
bin.
