REUSE
Appliances
CASE STUDY: Toledo Freecycle
In 2004, the Toledo Freecycle Ohio Network launched its online message
board, with the goal of helping people to reuse useful items within their
community.
The ToledoFreecycle board has 589 members in Lucas County
and its surrounding areas. Users of the message board can find new homes
for things they no longer need, and locate items they are looking for – all
for free.
The Freecycle Network is made up of many individual groups located in
1,105 communities around the world, with Ohio hosting 46 of these. It
is a grassroots movement of people who are giving and getting stuff for
free in their own towns.
Freecycling is a great way for people to exchange
goods rather than send them to landfill.
CASE STUDY: ReUse Industries
ReUse
Industries is a community-owned, non-profit organization that saves reusable
items from being landfilled to support a sustainable economy,
protect the environment, and create jobs.
ReUse Industries receives donations
from both organizations and individuals. Items donated are cleaned,
stored, repaired, and sold for reuse to businesses, agencies, and the
public.
ReUse Industries handles building materials, appliances, household items,
furnishings, equipment, lumber, hardware, and more. Since its inception,
ReUse has diverted more than 1,500 tons of reusable items away from local
landfills.
In a community with a 30% poverty rate, ReUse Industries is governed
and operated by low-income workers who use their skills and experience
in the repair and restoration of local resources. ReUse Industries is
committed to creating meaningful work and family wages for low-income
residents of southeast Ohio, and currently supports 12 full-time positions.
