Appliances collected for recycling
|
Major home appliances, often called "white goods," have long
useful lives of 10-18 years.
When they finally reach the end of their
lives, these appliances take on new value as an important raw material
for manufacturing. Discarded appliances are second only to old automobiles
as a source of recycled metals, particularly steel.
Ohio has widespread and comprehensive infrastructure for the reuse and
recycling of household appliances. Appliances can be recycled if they
are functional or repairable, and recycled if not. Ohio’s recycling
programs and steel industry have organized a model system for recovering
large appliances, including pick-up programs and drop-off centers. Many
of these programs receive grant funds to assist with collection and recycling.
Around 400 tons of appliances are recycled every year as a result of
our community grant program. Our success in appliance recycling is due
to both the grant funds offered and the strong participation by industry
and private scrap dealers, retailers, nonprofit organizations, state
government and individuals.
