How to Build Your Own Compost

  1. Most people like a container to place their garden waste and vegetable and fruit scraps in. Plastic compost bins, old metal drums with holes or enclosures made from bricks, planks or chicken wire make suitable containers.

  2. There are two types of organic material that can be added in approximately equal quantities to make quick, rich compost:

    1. “Greens” - kitchen scraps, green leaves, coffee grounds, plant material and tea bags.
    2. “Browns” - dead and brown organic matter like straw, dry leaves, sawdust, newspaper, and wood chips. You can also add food-stained paper waste - like pizza boxes and paper napkins - that can't be recycled with the rest of your paper.
