Case Study: Naval Surface Warfare Center

The plastic blast media used to
remove paint from this aircraft propeller is more efficient than
the previous material used, and is also recyclable.

At the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Washington DC, a strategy was
developed to build and operate ships that were more environmentally friendly
across their lifetimes.
An environmental management system was implemented
to minimize the environmental and health risks that occur during the
ship design, construction, operation, maintenance and disposal.
Many of the 93 hazardous materials previously used have been eliminated
or must now be used in limited amounts and under strict guidelines.
The
new T-AKE Class of ship will also reduce their waste outputs by a significant
amount, including:
- 94% reduction in sewage output
- 44% reduction in greywater output
- 100% reduction in the production
of volatile organic compounds
- 70% reduction in water consumption
- 65% reduction in carbon dioxide
emissions
- 70% reduction in waste production - this will save 5.74 tonnes
of waste being produced each year and save the navy $5 million
each year in disposal
costs.
