Case Study: National Park Service
In the National Park Service a unique partnership of programs and people
have joined together to implement an Environmental Leadership Program.
The team used an Environmental Management System approach to improve
environmental performance and to bring about sustainable practices within
the National Park Service. An environmental leadership pilot training
course has already been delivered to 250 employees.
The following individual parks have already achieved some significant
results:
- The new propane-fueled shuttle buses at Acadia and Zion National Parks
are helping to spread the message of environmental leadership and resource
stewardship to park visitors who use the buses.
- The Chesapeake and Ohio
Canal National Park have implemented a Trash Free Park Program, which
asks visitors to pack-out their garbage. This
helps to cut down park costs and protect the park’s resources.
- The Rocky Mountain National Park has become the first park in the
country to become a “Clean Cities” park, by introducing
alternative fuel vehicles - not just in the park, but in surrounding
communities
as well.

Boy Scouts collect cans, glass, and plastic bottles from the Glory
Hole Recreation Area of New Melones Lake. The money earned from their
collections helped to pay for fishing trips, patches, and the annual
Boy Scout Jamboree. |
