RECYCLE
Recycling Paper
Transportation costs are significant with a heavy material like recycled
paper, and paper mills don't like reaching more than 300 miles away for
feedstock. Fortunately, several paper mills in northeastern Ohio and
a few in the southwestern quadrant of the state are able to serve all
of Ohio, as well as parts of Pennsylvania, Indiana and Kentucky.
One of the world's largest makers of recycled paperboard and packaging
products has a subsidiary here in Ohio. The industry has recently developed
new recycling technology that allows them to accept food-waste contaminated
paper, such as old pizza boxes. This waste paper, which could not previously
be accepted for recycling, is now processed into 100% recycled paperboard.

Recycling Plastic
Ohio’s recycling industry has done well to develop technologies
for easy recycling of plastics such as milk and detergent bottles (HDPE)
and soda and water bottles (PET). In fact, Ohio is home to the leading
supplier of recycled PET plastic resin in North America.

These days though, more and more plastic packaging is being made by
mixing different kinds of plastics together, to create thinner, stronger
products. These mixed plastics are much harder to recycle, due to contamination
problems and the difficulty of separating the plastics types out again.
In southern Ohio, however, a leading company is using new technology
that enables them to recycle these mixed plastics into products for the
transportation and highway industries.
Over 4,000 tons of recycled plastics are used each year to make products
like wheel chocks, speed bumps, scuff liners for tractor-trailers, and
parts for guardrails. These products contain around 98% recycled plastic.
