Air
The USPS has the nation's largest fleet of alternative-fuel vehicles.
Instead of gasoline, they run on electric batteries, compressed natural
gas, ethanol, and biodiesel fuel. All these vehicles produce less pollution
than regular vehicles. The electric vehicles produce no pollution at all,
and are clean, quiet and efficient to run. Using alternative-fuel vehicles
shows our commitment to sustainable principles - and helps preserve our
environment from harmful gasoline emissions.

Interesting Fact
The USPS tested the first electric mail vehicle in Buffalo in 1899 as
an alternative to the horse and buggy. This was just a few years after
Henry Ford tested his first car!

Lighting for homes
The USPS generates 30 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually by
using less of Earth's non-renewable resources and more renewable energy
sources. This is enough to light 300,000 homes for a year, and stops several
pollutants being released into the atmosphere each year:
- 25 million pounds of carbon dioxide,
- 60 thousand pounds of nitrogen oxides,
- 18 thousand pounds of sulfur dioxide.
