Reuse

Reusing materials saves money and precious resources. The USPS and our post offices have many programs that reuse all sorts of things:

  • We buy tires that have been remade with new treads - instead of new tires.

  • We use re-refined motor oil whenever possible, to conserve non-renewable resources.
  • We use thousands of plastic pallets and millions of containers to handle mail - all made of recycled material instead of wood. And once their useful life is over, we recycle them again!

  • Many post offices use recycled printer cartridges.
  • Old computer equipment is either sold or given to companies that re-manufacture - or recover resources.
  • Most post offices recharge and reuse batteries for their power equipment, such as forklifts.

What about this! Did you know that the USPS reuses over 60 million mail sacks every year in our operations? Imagine the resources we're saving!
