CASE STUDY: Shelby County & North Central Solid Waste Management
District

Shelby County, with a population of 49,000, has taken the lead in commercial
recycling. Focusing on the commercial waste stream, materials such as
corrugated cardboard, white and mixed office paper and glass are being
diverted from landfill and recycled into new products.
A variety of facilities
are targeted, including 9 schools, over 20 retail outlets, 43 public
institutions, and almost 25 government and private office buildings.
Shelby County’s commercial recycling program diverted 367 tons
of materials to contribute to the North Central Solid Waste Management
District’s 6-county recycling rate of 53%.
CASE STUDY: Monroe County & Southeast Ohio Solid Waste Management
District
In Appalachian Ohio, Monroe County has been successfully working with
commercial organizations to divert recyclable materials from the waste
stream. Focusing on almost 30 commercial and retail outlets, 9 government
offices, and 6 schools, the county recycling program collected 1.5 tons
of recyclables in 2003.
The county’s efforts have contributed to
the Southeast Ohio Solid Waste Management District’s 6-county recycling
rate of 43%.
