GRANTS
Material Recovery Facility Grant Project
After collection, recyclable materials are usually taken to a local
Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to be sorted and prepared for recycling.
To help public and non-profit MRFs to operate more efficiently, the
ODNR Division of Recycling & Litter Prevention developed the Pilot
Material Recovery Facility Grant Project.
The statewide project provides funding to analyze MRF operations and
then implement recommendations to increase their capacity and operating
efficiency. Under this program, MRFs in Butler, Fairfield, Muskingum,
Portage, Perry, Shelby and Wyandot counties will benefit from a total
of over $188,000 in grants.
CASE STUDY: Portage County Solid Waste District MRF
The Portage County Solid Waste District’s MRF operates as one
of the best in Ohio. The MRF handles a range of materials from residents,
commercial businesses and industry, processing well over 12,000 tons
each year.
In spite of the size of the facility, it lacked storage space, which
was limiting the output of materials and meant that the baler was operating
at only 70% capacity. As a result of the MRF efficiency study, an increase
in outside storage space was created. This allowed the baler to operate
at full capacity and increased output by approximately 3,000 tons per
year. This also saved the MRF from going to a second shift, which would
have doubled labor costs.
