Background
Ollie’s Island is the third in a series of interactive edu-tainment programs produced by Sustain Ability International Pty Ltd. The first program, Ollie Recycles, was released in Australia in 1997 and then two versions were released in the United Kingdom in 1999 and 2001. The second program, Ollie Saves the Planet, was released in Australia in 2003 and the United States of America in 2004.
All programs focus on the issue of sustainability in some form so as to enable the broader community to understand and appreciate their connection with the natural world.
The Ollie’s Island Program uses the latest in multimedia technology to deliver a state of the art edu-tainment program. Its objective is to reconnect the consumer to the environmental, social and economic impacts of their consumption so that they have an understanding and appreciation of where everything they eat, drink, use and wear comes from. The further objective is to encourage the user to identify their role within the chain, so that they recognise the potential positive outcomes of their own behavioural changes towards more sustainable actions.
Like previous programs in the Ollie Suite, the Ollie’s Island program is supported by a range of government, private and industry organisations who can see the benefit of educating the broader community about aspects of sustainable production and consumption. Never before have this unique group come together to communicate a combined message to the community. The fact that they have done so in the new Ollie’s Island Program is testament to the message of the program and the quality of the resulting educational product.
The producers of the program will spend the next couple of years working in communities to educate teachers, community leaders, parents and students in how to best use the new Ollie’s Island Program in their classroom and community activities.
