City West Water
In
early 1995, Melbourne's water and sewerage services began operating as
three separate service providers - City West Water, South East Water and
Yarra Valley Water, serviced by one wholesaler, Melbourne Water Corporation.
This move was designed to create a more efficient, competitive retail
industry and all the enterprises remain Victorian-government owned.
City
West Water provides water, sewage and trade waste services to Melbourne's
CBD, inner and western suburbs. As a retail water business, City West
Water purchases water at wholesale cost from Melbourne Water Corporation
to provide to its customers. City West Water also pays Melbourne Water
Corporation for the treatment of sewage and trade waste. Melbourne Water
treats the majority of sewage which City West Water collects via its sewerage
mains, although City West Water has one treatment plant at Altona.
City West Water plays an integral role in managing precious water resources
for the community - now as well as for future generations. City West Water
has environmental sustainability as one of its core business goals and
as an organisation, it recognises, encourages and promotes environmental
initiatives and achievements in Inner and Western Melbourne. This focus
is demonstrated through the range of environmental initiatives spearheaded
by its Service Sustainability Group.
These include:
- Community Environment / Sustainability Awards
- Cleaner production partnerships
- Enviro Partnerships
- Waste minimisation programs
- Water recycling initiatives
- Water conservation education
