In 1998, Australia Post was awarded the Banksia Award in the Government category for its environmental leadership. This award was given in recognition of a number of initiatives, including:

Implementation of a new environmental management system;
Adoption of the Greenhouse Challenge program;
Development of a waste recycling program; and
Development of a significant wetland area.

Since joining the Greenhouse Challenge in July 1996, Australia Post has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 28.1%.
