Support from Origin Energy helps teachers Save the Environment
Origin Energy is supporting a group of committed educators from the
Global Education Project in Victoria and South Australia to help deliver
a powerful workshop on global education to teachers across each state.
The energy company will supply a free copy of the Ollie Saves the Planet
CD-ROM to each teacher attending the workshop to help communicate the
ideas of global education and sustainability.
As a major supplier of gas and electricity in Australia, New Zealand
and the Pacific, Origin Energy cares about encouraging the responsible
use of natural resources and is committed to supporting programs such
as 'Ollie Saves the Planet' and the Global Education Project.
The Global Education Project is contracted by the Australian Government's
overseas aid agency (AUSAID) to provide professional development in global
education to teachers and trainee teachers. The project’s goal
is to provide a coordinated approach for teachers in government and non-government
schools to develop the knowledge and skills needed to integrate global
education into the curriculum.
Jonathan Hayman from the Global Education Project in Victoria has received
overwhelming response from teachers attending his sessions. "Not
only are they really interested in global issues, but they’re also
thrilled to receive a resource they know will communicate effectively
to their students back at school."
Caroline Smith from the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne
is also impressed with this professional development program. "Students
today are growing up in an increasingly complex world and it’s
vital for them to learn about issues of poverty, human rights, and environmental
sustainability. Teachers are inspired by this program and they also think
the Ollie Saves the Planet CD ROM is a wonderful resource that will support
their work."
"The easy-to-use program is highly interactive and its message
of sustainability in all facets of our lives is easy to understand. It
fits neatly with the existing curriculum, which makes it easy to incorporate
into lessons plans," she says.
The Australian-made and developed Ollie Saves the Planet Program is
designed for 5-13 year-olds and uses a cast of cartoon mates, headed
by Ollie, who cycle and skateboard their way through saving the planet.
The program's message is ecological and social sustainability and the
importance of reducing our impact on the environment.
