Recycling plastic bottles does make a difference. It reduces the amount of
waste going to landfill and conserves our natural resources, such as oil. And the best thing is, it's really easy!
Kerbside Collection Scheme
You may have a kerbside collection scheme in your
area. If so, your local authority will provide a special box or sack for your recyclable rubbish. This is picked up from your doorstep, like normal rubbish. Most plastic
collection schemes only collect plastic bottles and not other plastic containers – make sure you only collect the things your council wants you to collect!
Plastic Bottle Bank If you don't have kerbside collection in your area, take your bottles to a plastic bottle bank.
Bottle banks are large containers placed in public places, usually in central areas of towns and cities. To find out where your nearest plastic bottle bank is, call or write to your local
authority's recycling officer.
At the bottle bank, you may need to sort your bottles into PET, PVC and
HDPE – look out for instructions to help you. And don't forget to take the tops off and squash the bottles before you deposit them. Saving space helps to reduce costs and conserves energy.
When you're shopping, look for products made from recycled plastic. More and more companies will then start using recycled materials.
