Water as a Resource – Facts and Figures

Water is a very commonly used resource. It is used in agriculture to produce food, and in industry to produce many of the materials and items we use every day. You might be surprised to learn how much water goes into some products:

  • It takes about 4,000 gallons of water to produce a pound of meat.
  • It takes 110 litres to produce one orange.
  • It takes over 200,000 gallons to produce a ton of some metals.
  • It takes 10 gallons to produce one copy of the newspaper.
  • It takes about 500 gallons of water to create one pound of rice.
  • It takes nearly a gallon of water to produce a bottle of beer.
  • It takes about 20 gallons a day to produce milk from one cow.
