Fresh Water in the United StatesAlmost 20% of all water we use here in the United States comes from aquifers under the ground. So, even though you can't see them, our groundwater supplies are very important! The rest of the water we use is 'surface water' from streams, rivers, lakes and reservoirs. In 1995, around 341 billion gallons of fresh water was used in the United States every day. Three-quarters of this water was used for irrigating our food and fiber crops and for producing our electricity. The rest was used for public supply, industry and other uses.
