Forests in the United States

Almost 25% of the United States is covered in forest, and we have some of the best managed forests in the world. Many of our paper and other forest industries have turned to sustainable forestry to ensure an ongoing supply of raw materials. Plantation trees are usually replaced as they are cut down, and many paper mills now have their own plantations to supply their wood pulp.

However, plantation forests are not the same as old-growth forests. Old-growth forests are more than 250 years old and contain a large number of our native species of plants and animals, including many threatened and endangered species. It is very important to make sure that we manage our forests carefully to preserve their biodiversity.

Forests are more valuable than just the price of the wood in the trees. People use forests to go camping and hiking, and to just get away from the city. Some forests contain trees that have been alive for hundreds and hundreds of years. Preserving our forests also means preserving part of our history.
