Forest ManagementAll forests require some form of management whether they are intended for multiple uses including the production of timber or managed solely for conservation purposes. Since the arrival of Europeans, the amount of forested land in America has decreased due to land clearing for agriculture, urban development and other activities such as road and power line construction. The clearing of forests, or deforestation, can have a number of environmental impacts, from affecting the quality of the soil, air and water to reducing biodiversity. However, in America the sustainable harvesting of forests for timber products is not deforestation. After harvesting, foresters sustainably manage and regenerate and replant forests so that they will grow back similar their former state.
