Agriculture – Facts and Figures

  • Over 27,000 square miles of farming land around the world is abandoned every year because the soil can no longer support crops. This is due to unsustainable farming practices, such as: clearing too much land; growing the wrong types of crops; using too much water; using too many pesticides; and having too many animals on one area of land.
  • It takes a lot of resources, energy, labour and water to produce the food and fiber we use. Did you know that you need about 2,400 gallons of water to grow just 1 pound of cotton, and 185 gallons of water to grow enough wheat to make just one loaf of bread!

Nicholson, 2000.
