Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture is a name to describe ways of farming that produce food and fiber without harming the soil, water and environment. This allows the land to stay productive, so that it can continue to be used for farming in the future. Some things farmers are doing to become more sustainable include:

  • Growing crops that are more suited to the conditions on their farm.
  • Planting trees to improve the quality of the soil and control the level of the water table.
  • Planting crops that help improve the soil.
  • Growing more than one type of crop to reduce the need for pesticides.
  • Using compost or animal manure as a natural fertilizers and soil improvers.
  • Using irrigation systems that reduce water use.
  • Planting and protecting natural vegetation to retain local biodiversity.
  • Concentrating on caring for the land for future generations, rather than just using it for today.
