Indigenous American Culture

The first cultures that existed in the United States were indigenous cultures practiced by the original inhabitants of our land for many thousands of years. Other cultures have only existed in our nation since European settlement, less than 500 years ago.

The American landscape and the natural cycles of the environment play an important role in indigenous culture. Their ancient traditions show a unique understanding of the land, and of people’s places within their environment. Like other cultures, there is much that can be shared and learnt from American indigenous cultures.
