Making your own Worm Farm
-
A worm farm can be made from almost any container that does not rot quickly.
Line your container with newspaper, to stop the ingredients from getting
out and making a mess.
- Spread about two inches of compost into the container. If you don’t have any, your worms can live
in newspaper instead. The newspaper needs to be torn into strips, scrunched
up and dampened.
Worms need some grit in their tummies to eat, so add some soil and spread
it through. This compost or newspaper is called 'bedding'.
- Add some water to keep your worm farm moist but not wet.
- Add the worms. You can buy worms from breeders. There
are special compost worms that will work better than others, such as the “red
wiggler” worm (Eisenia foetida).
Add the compost worms onto the top of your pile. They will creep into the
bedding to get away from the light.
- A
worm bin needs a good cover to keep the moisture in. Use a few
layers of burlap or a piece of carpet felt.
- Feed your worms. They can
eat all kitchen scraps that come from plants - except for orange
and lemon peel!
