Steel Recycling Tips

  • Empty steel cans before recycling and give them a rinse in old dishwater or put them in an empty space in the dishwasher. Then, place any removed can lids inside the cans.
  • Many local recycling programs accepts steel aerosol cans. To recycle aerosol cans, empty them through normal use, then place them in your recycling container.
  • Many recycling programs also accept steel paint cans. To recycle them, you should use up the paint, leave the cans open so that the thin skin of paint inside dries out, then place the cans and lids into your recycling container separately. If there is some paint remaining in the can, don't put it in your recycling container. Instead, you may need to take it to a collection point where both the can and the paint can be processed so that they can both be recycled. Check with your local recycling program officer to find out how to recycle paint cans in your area.
  • If you don't know whether or not your community has a recycling program, call the Steel Recycling Hotline at 1-800-YES-1-CAN (1-800-937-1226) to find out where you can take your steel cans for recycling. You can also find out where to recycle used appliances as well as other steel materials by calling this hotline, or visiting their website at www.recycle-steel.org.
