Waste in the United States

  • “Waste” is anything that a person owns that is no longer needed for its original purpose.
  • “Garbage” or "trash" is waste that is not reused or recycled, and ends up in landfill.
  • Over the last 30 years, the amount of waste that Americans produce has more than doubled.
  • Americans are one of the highest producers of waste per person in the world. The average American creates around 4.4 pounds of trash a day!
