Household Hazardous Waste, continued

Household hazardous waste items should not be thrown away with normal household waste. They can pose a danger to waste collection workers and the environment if not treated carefully. They shouldn’t be stored for too long around the home either. They must be taken to an appropriate drop-off center. At these drop-off centers, staff are trained to sort and classify the hazardous materials. They store the chemicals in specially designed containment units. These units are collected by a hazardous waste hauler who packs the items into drums. They are then transported to a hazardous waste incinerator, landfill or other treatment facility for proper disposal.

Some materials, such as used motor oil, lead-acid batteries and antifreeze can be recycled, but must be prepared carefully.
