Recycling Tips, continued

Paper and Cardboard

Paper and corrugated cardboard products which are recyclable include:

newspapers, magazines, catalogs, envelopes, telephone directories, writing paper, corrugated cardboard boxes, egg cartons, paper grocery bags and paperboard (eg cereal boxes). To be sure, check with your local recycling program officer to find out which paper and cardboard products are accepted for recycling in your area.

Paper and cardboard products which are not recyclable include:

waxed cardboard cartons (including all cardboard packaging that goes in the refrigerator or freezer), plastic coated paper bags (e.g. cereal bags), tissues and any food-stained paper products (such as pizza boxes or used paper napkins).

Remember to:

  • Separate paper and cardboard from each other and store them separately from other recyclables (unless your recycling program allows mixing of materials).
  • Flatten cardboard boxes.
  • If your local recycling program collects paper, make sure that on collection days you tie the bundles with string (not plastic!) or place a heavy object on top to stop the paper from blowing away. You can also place bundles into paper grocery store bags for collection. Have separate bundles for paper and cardboard.
  • Make sure the paper isn't dirty or contaminated with food, metals, glass or plastic. Newspapers and magazines need to be clean and dry for recycling.
  • Paper and cardboard which can be recycled: newspapers, magazines, advertising leaflets, letters, telephone directories, writing paper, cardboard and cardboard boxes, egg cartons and envelopes.
