Setting up a Reuse Program at School

There are many ways that your school can introduce a Reuse Program. You could create an awareness campaign, hold a school wide event or have a classroom competition. Remember to set down practical guidelines that make it easy for students and teachers to reuse. Here's some tips and suggestions:

In the school cafeteria:

  • Ask students to bring their own mugs for soups and drinks, instead of using disposable cups.

In the classroom:

  • Have a “swap box” for items that are no longer needed by students but are not broken and can be reused by someone else
  • Laminate worksheets so that they can reused again and again.
  • Have a reuse bin where all paper can be reused for scrap, drafts etc.
  • Encourage students to bring objects from home that can be reused in the art and craft room, like icecream and margarine containers, cardboard etc.

General:

  • Set up a textbook sale at the end of each year
  • Set up a “Trash and Treasure” stall at the school fair
  • Have a “second-hand” stall during lunchtime.
