Fisheries – Facts and Figures

  • We catch over 5 times more fish today than we did fifty years ago.
  • China alone catches over 25 million tonnes of fish every year.
  • Some fishing nets, called “trawler nets” can be up to 65 kilometres long, and 15 metres deep.
  • Some fish populations have been reduced to a tenth of their original size – and are still getting smaller.
  • Many sea animals – like dolphins, turtles, seals, birds and many species of fish – are also accidentally killed in fishing nets.
