Fisheries in Australia

Australia has the third largest fishing area in the world. However, there aren’t as many fish in our seas as we would like to think and fishing catches of many species are getting smaller and smaller. So Australia now has a growing industry for farming fish and sea plants for humans to use. This is called aquaculture.

Fish farms use large cages and nets to grow fish, like growing sheep on a farm. Fish farms must be carefully looked after – farmers must take care that food for the fish is from a sustainable source, and that the farm does not pollute water, spread disease or damage marine habitat.

In Australia, there are fish farms in freshwater areas as well as in the sea. If these fisheries are looked after responsibly, they can become a sustainable way of using seafood resources without harming ocean ecosystems and biodiversity, and may even allow nearly extinct fish populations to build back up in our oceans.
