Mining for Fossil Fuels, continued

Mining for oil and natural gas is usually done with drills that go deep into the earth. Oil drilling is often done out in the ocean, on big floating oil rigs. Drilling for oil must be done carefully to minimise the risk of polluting the surrounding ocean and harming wildlife. Most risks involve accidents.

Once it is taken out of the ground, the oil must then be transported by tanker ships or through long pipes. Accidents have occurred when these tankers have sunk or run aground, causing large oil spills, which can kill plants, fish and animals and damage whole coastlines.
