Agriculture in AustraliaAlthough Australia is a huge country, only about 6% of all our land is used for growing crops. This is because of our climate – in the drier, hotter areas the soil is not good enough to grow crops and there is not enough water. Farmers have to deal with many problems which they are unable to control, like droughts, floods and bushfires. Many also have difficulties controlling pests like feral animals, weeds, insects and disease. Then there are other environmental problems like salinity and soil erosion. Farmers need to manage all of these problems if they want their farms to be productive over many years. An organisation has been set up in Australia called Landcare, which helps local farmers to care for their land by planting trees, looking after waterways and switching to more sustainable farming practices. Even city people can get involved with Landcare – contact your local Department of Agriculture to find out how you can help care for our land through Landcare.
