Agriculture and WaterSome crops need lots of water to grow well – more than the rain can provide. So many farmers have installed irrigation systems to water their crops. Often water used for irrigation contains small amounts of salts. Continually watering crops with this water can cause a build-up of salt in the soil, making the soil less fertile. This problem is called “irrigated land salinity”. Water which runs off salty land ends up being washed back into rivers and lakes. Taking large amounts of fresh water out of rivers and creeks and replacing it with small amounts of salty water makes river ecosystems very unhealthy, harming fish and other populations of water plants and animals.
