Indigenous Australian CultureThe first culture that existed in Australia was indigenous culture practiced by Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders. These people have been living in Australia for more than 40,000 years and are one of the oldest races of people on the Earth today. Other cultures have only existed in Australia since European settlement, little more than 200 years ago. The Australian landscape and the natural cycles of the environment play an important role in indigenous culture. Their ancient traditions show a unique understanding of the land, and of people’s places within their environment. Like other cultures, there is much that can be shared and learnt from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture.
