Making Newspapers, continuedNewsprint made in Australia contains 20% to 55% recycled content. Each year around 160,000 tonnes of old newspapers and magazines are recycled back into newsprint. If this was bundled and stacked up it would make a column 3000 kilometres high or, laid on their side, the bundles would stretch from Sydney to Perth and stick out into the ocean for 250 kilometres at each end! Of all the newsprint used in Australia, more than 70% is recycled back into new newsprint, as well as cardboard and other packaging materials, home insulation and kitty litter. Publishers National Environment Bureau, 2002.
