What is Landfill?, continuedIn days gone by, landfill sites were open places where people dumped their waste. These sites were ugly and allowed leachate, a liquid made from rotting waste, to leak out and pollute the surrounding soil and groundwater. These open landfills also attracted insects, birds, rats, stray cats and other pests and were often very smelly. They were a fire hazard in the local community. Modern landfill sites are created under strict guidelines and are much safer for people, wildlife and the surrounding environment.
