Preventing Biodiversity Loss at Home
You can increase the biodiversity in your area by turning your own backyard
into a native wildlife refuge:
- Plant native trees, shrubs and grasses; build a frog pond; place
nest boxes on trees for birds and possums; and leave rocks and logs
in your garden to attract lizards, beetles and other insects.
- Pets can catch and kill native wildlife - keep your cats and dogs
indoors at night and put a bell on your cat to warn native birds.
Make sure your cat is fed well.
- Don’t release unwanted pets into the wild - take them to the RSPCA.
- Avoid feeding native wildlife – it could make them sick and may
also attract introduced species.
- Avoid using chemical pesticides
in your garden.
- Never dump weeds or grass clippings in the bush. Don’t grow garden
plants that can become weeds.
- Care for sick or injured native wildlife by taking them to an animal
shelter.
- Leave spiders and snakes alone, as they are an important part of
biodiversity.
