Recycle Aluminium

Things to do at home

  1. 1. Keep count of all the aluminium cans your family uses in a week.  How many of these get recycled?

  2.  Some drink cans are made from steel, which is a different type of metal. Collect a number of empty cans – some steel, some aluminium. Can you tell the difference between them?
    Hints
    • Look for symbols on the bottom or side of the can.
    • Look at the base of the can – is it shiny or dull?
    • Test it with a magnet – does it stick to the magnet?
    • Weigh the cans – is there any difference in how heavy they are?

  3. Weigh a number of empty aluminium cans on a pair of kitchen scales.  Try these maths mindbenders:
    1. How much does each can weigh?  (Hint: divide the total weight by the number of cans).
    2. How many cans do you need to collect to make up 1kilo (1000 grams) of cans?
